Background of the Study
Visual language has emerged as a dominant form of communication on social media, particularly on platforms like Instagram where memes play a central role. In Nigeria, the use of memes has not only become a form of entertainment but also a medium for social and political commentary (Eze, 2023). This study explores the syntactic structure of memes and how visual language conveys meaning through image-text interplay. The unique hybrid nature of memes, which blend visual elements with linguistic cues, reflects broader trends in digital communication. Memes are culturally embedded artifacts that evolve rapidly, often mirroring the societal and political climates in Nigeria (Olatunde, 2024). Despite their widespread usage, the systematic analysis of meme syntax and its implications for understanding digital language remains limited. By focusing on Instagram memes, the study aims to provide insights into how syntax operates within a predominantly visual medium, thereby contributing to both linguistic theory and digital media studies. The investigation will explore how elements such as font, layout, and juxtaposition interact with traditional syntactic principles to form meaning, and how audiences interpret these messages in a digital context (Adekunle, 2023). This study also considers the role of cultural nuances in meme creation and dissemination, offering a nuanced perspective on how visual language evolves in digital Nigeria.

Statement of the Problem
There is a growing reliance on memes as a form of communication on social media, yet the syntactic structures underlying these visual messages remain underexplored. In Nigeria, where memes serve as a powerful vehicle for commentary, the lack of systematic research on their syntactic dimensions presents a significant gap in understanding digital language evolution. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating how Instagram memes employ visual and textual elements to create meaning. The absence of comprehensive research in this area complicates efforts to fully appreciate the cultural and communicative impact of memes on Nigerian society (Chima, 2024). Additionally, understanding meme syntax is critical for appreciating how digital communities negotiate and reinterpret linguistic norms in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the syntactic elements present in Instagram memes in Nigeria.

  • To analyze the interaction between visual and textual components in meme construction.

  • To assess the cultural impact of meme syntax on digital communication practices.

Research Questions

  • What syntactic structures are evident in Nigerian Instagram memes?

  • How do visual and textual elements interact to create meaning in memes?

  • What is the cultural significance of meme syntax in Nigerian digital discourse?

Significance of the Study
This study highlights the evolving nature of visual language in digital communication, providing valuable insights into meme syntax and its cultural implications in Nigeria. The findings will aid linguists, media scholars, and communication practitioners in understanding the impact of hybrid visual-textual media on language evolution and social commentary. It underscores the importance of analyzing digital artifacts to capture contemporary linguistic trends (Ike, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to evaluating Instagram memes and their syntactic structures within the Nigerian context, excluding other social media platforms and broader visual language phenomena.
